Local Fashion Blogger Feature: Meet Grace Liang of Color And Grace

Fashion bloggers are the go-to these days for style advice and inspiration.  We are proud to feature a local fashion blogger who is making waves with her style and sharing it all on her blog, Color and Grace.  Learn more about Grace Liang in our exclusive interview!

Share with us your background and how you got started with your blog...

I was born and raised in China and moved to the U.S.A. in 2007 to marry my husband. Fashion has always been something I really enjoy and my dream has been to somehow work in that industry. My first try was when I was in high school. I was accepted by a fashion design school in Beijing, China but my family couldn’t afford the tuition. In China at that time, we didn’t have any working opportunity or student loans like they do here. My second try was back in 2005, when I opened my own online women’s clothing boutique. It was pretty popular very quickly so I added my home studio and even hired an assistant. But because of my plan to move to America I had to sell that business. You know the saying “third time’s the charm”. Round 3 came about 16 months ago. I was web surfing blogs and websites and suddenly it hit me. If I used the same investment of my time that I was on looking at other people’s work and instead, put that energy into starting my own blog, I might actually be able to build something. Plus, I had just turned 40 earlier that year, if I didn’t try it then, I might never get another chance to satisfy my passion about fashion.

When did Color and Grace start and how has your blog evolved since?

Color and Grace was born on December 7, 2014. In the 16 months since it has grown to about 30,000 monthly page views and totally about 30,000 followers. Color and Grace has become the place for petite/over 40’s women who are looking for inspiration, tips and ideas for fashion and life style. I am always looking for ways to improve my content and in recent months have switched my focus to use my blog as a platform to promote local designers, events and anything else fashion related in the greater Detroit area. I realized that with my blog I actually have a platform to help others and am happy and proud to do so. Detroit is coming back and I love to play a positive role in this movement.

What do you love most about your job as a fashion blogger?

Seeing and hearing how some of my followers are looking and feeling their best because they used my suggestions. And all the fun events that I got invited to. For example, the recent New York Fashion Week. But the best part is I have met so many great people because of blogging.

What is your reader like and what do they wear? What are they interested in?

I believe my readers follow me because we all love the elegant and classy style. We are not trend victims, but we are not behind the times either. We know how to mix high end and mainstream, and also add a little bit of a fun twist to inject our personality.

What are your current favorite styles for Spring?

I love traveling very much and have been to many places. so this Spring I am really into the Globetrotter style.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself or your blog?

Ordinary, everyday people can overcome huge obstacles in their lives if they remember two things. Believe in yourself and do not give up! The average American can not even imagine the conditions where I grew up in northeast China. I tell my husband about the house I lived in and he just shakes his head and mumbles something about pioneer times. Throw in the traditional cultural beliefs in China that boys are the chosen gender and there was little chance and zero support for me or my dreams.

It wasn’t until I had moved away from home to the big city life of Shanghai that I finally started breaking away from what I called my Ugly Duckling phase. I was in my 30’s when I first heard I might just be pretty. The first time a man ever encouraged me to follow my dreams was from the one I moved to America to marry. He helped me to really believe in myself and since then, more and more good things have happened.

It’s not easy. I work really hard at my life. I have a full time job along with being a full time blogger. Then in my spare time, I hang out with my family and friends or am in my garden or working around our home. Throw in a little time to eat and sleep and there just aren’t enough hours in most days. But when I sit down and look around me I can honestly say I love my life now!

There’s no doubt in my mind that If I can do it, so can you! Just don’t give up on your dreams!

Share with us your background and how you got started with styling…

I have always had a passion for fashion and loved putting complete looks while out and about shopping! I became a stylist for a leading accessories business and enjoyed sharing with others how to put amazing looks together with items from your existing wardrobe without spending a fortune. Once I became a mom I realized how easy it is for us to focus on caring for our little ones and often times neglect taking care of ourselves. It becomes convenient to wear the same yoga pants, mom jeans, or the same outfits for work. I too became a victim of losing my “sense of style” and made the decision to do a complete closet clean out and keep those clothes that made me look and feel confident. In addition, I used the skill of versatility to create multiple looks from just a few pieces of clothes! I wanted to share this easy yet beneficial transformation with other moms and decided to do styling full time!

When did (your business name) open and how has your styling business evolved since?

I founded Glam Up Style in June 2014 as an online boutique that created complete outfits. In the summer of 2015 I added in the styling aspect and loved it so much that I transformed the business into a full time styling service in December 2015 and it has been taking off ever since!

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing women happy and feeling confident about their looks again! I love it when a client tells me that they are excited to get dressed because they love everything they own.

What is your ideal client like and what do they wear?  What are they interested in?

My ideal client is a powerhouse mom (those who strive for awesomeness in their home and work/business). She loves wearing anything that provides comfort! She is interested in how to get comfortable yet stylish looks in her wardrobe so she can feel great as well as look fabulous!

What are your current favorite styles for the season?

Fringe!!! I am true boho at heart so when I saw the fringe trend taking center stage this season I was beyond excited. I love the different variations that is available with this trend and how certain looks can appeal to all style types and occasions.

StyledLife Spotlight: Meet our intern Bridget Lynch

We are so excited to feature our intern, Bridget Lynch, from The Art Institute of Michigan, today.  She has been instrumental to the company with her social media strategies and styling assistance throughout her time with us.  And now it is time for you to tell us a little bit about yourself Bridget!

In regards to your personal style, do you have a signature accessory? Who inspires your style?

“Sunglasses would unquestionably be my signature accessory. I own so many of them and I love to mix them up from designer to the super cheap funky ones, they are always something I need to have on me at all times. Rihanna inspires my style, so much. Anything that she puts on just looks effortlessly cool and I love that she is always mixing men’s wear into her style and its not always super feminine.”

Any items in your closet that you can’t live without?

“I can not live without my black vegan leather jacket. I am obsessed with it because no animals were harmed in the making, it’s extremely comfortable and looks like the real deal. I am also obsessed with the grunge fashion period so I love to throw it on top of any outfit to give it a more rock and roll vibe.”

Do you have a favorite fashion, lifestyle, food or business blog?

“My favorite blogs at the moment have to be Man Repeller and Into The Gloss. Man Repeller is very fashion forward and I love the tone of voice on the whole blog. Into The Gloss is more focused on beauty and cosmetics, but I always go there when I am looking for new beauty products to buy.”

What are you currently reading and listening to??

“I like to read a lot of books that have to deal with the fashion industry, I am currently reading the new book by Diane von Furstenberg titled The Woman I Wanted to Be.  You can usually find me listening to 90’s alternative music or rap music, which is kind of a weird mix but it works for me.”

What are your FAVORITE features of your THE STYLED LIFE account?

“I love the calendar on the virtual closet that lets me plan my outfits ahead of time. It takes a lot of stress off in the mornings when your outfit is already planned out. I also have a slight addiction to creating outfits in my virtual closet.”

And lastly, any “words to live by” for our readers?

I live by the words of Coco Chanel when she said “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” I really love minimalism and I do think less is more, so Coco had it right.
