The Styled Life Spotlight: Chloe + Isabel Accessories with Rebecca Zimmerman

Today we are proud to feature a new retailer that is joining our community of stylish members: Chloe + Isabel.  Brought to us by merchandiser, Rebecca Zimmerman, we are excited to accessorize ourselves with some new jewelry!  Learn more about Becky and the amazing new line of accessories from Chloe + Isabel in this exclusive interview!

Share with us your background and how you got started with Chloe + Isabel…

I am a teacher and a new mom and love fashion.  I have always loved accessories and being able to change up outfits I have (or even simple outfits) with a scarf or jewelry.  Several months ago, I came across a feature on Chloe + Isabel in People magazine that featured the Sculpted Feather Hinged Cuff. I looked up the piece and started exploring the site for other items that interested me. I soon found my shopping cart full of items from everyday delicate pieces to statement pieces full of color. On checkout, the question came up about being interested in becoming a merchandiser. After receiving my order and speaking to a consultant, I was hooked! I love sharing the jewelry and accessories!

What do you love most about the jewelry and company?

I love the versatility in the pieces! If in the title it says “convertible” [the piece] can be worn multiple ways. Almost 75% of the necklaces and earrings are this way, meaning you can get more looks for the same amount of money. It really makes everything more valuable. In addition, everything is money back guaranteed for life and hypoallergenic .

What is your customer like?  What do they wear?

The best part about this jewelry is we appeal to everyone! I don’t have just one type of customer. From high school seniors looking for prom jewelry, to grandmas’s going to church, to even men….we have something to appeal to every age group and every taste.

What are your current favorite products?

I currently love the Limencello line…. there is the wrap, the statement necklace, statement earrings, beach towel, iPhone case, and even a beach hat. All inspired by lemons and Italy.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself or the jewels?

I think if you want to update your accessories with items that are high quality that will last this is the brand for you. Fun and fresh but also pieces that are completely timeless!

Chloe + Isabel products are now available for purchase via your THE STYLED LIFE account!  Create an outfit or request an outfit with any of the new pieces and purchase them directly from your dashboard.

Local Fashion Spotlight: Designer Rachelle Marie Willnus of Derby Hats by Rachelle

This headpiece put Rachelle Marie Willnus on the map as winner of the Head-To-Head Hat Competition at Michigan F.A.S.H. Fest 2012.  Photo credit: Jennifer Alder

Today we are proud to feature a most talented designer that is making HUGE waves in the local fashion scene in Detroit.  Rachelle Marie Willnus, owner and lead designer of Derby Hats by Rachelle, creates stunning custom headpieces that have been featured in magazines, museums, and movies- locally, nationally and globally!  Rachelle’s grace and love for beauty is clear in her personality and work.  She is such a joy to speak to and collaborate with.  Learn more about her background, amazing accomplishments, and future design plans in this exclusive interview!

This headpiece was made for a fairy-inspired photo shoot.  The piece is currently on display in the Detroit Historical Museum in the Fashion D.Fined Exhibit featuring Detroit area designers who represent the past, present and future of Detroit Fashion.    Photographer: Jennifer Alder           Model: Lia Morse                  Headwear and dress: Rachelle Marie Willnus

When did you begin making headpieces and knew this is what you were meant to do?

I have been designing and creating hats and hat fascinators since 2009.  I started out my career in life as an Instructional Systems Designer – creating training programs for engineers at Ford. I suppose the design gene was always there…My background in Instructional Systems Design is helpful in hat making because I understand FORM to FUNCTION to FIT. Not every headpiece will look good on every person, but every person can look good in a headpiece designed for their headshape…That is where I come in.

I began working at Ford Motor Company when I was 19. My manufacturing design background made for an easy transition into hat design; which also requires a strong knowledge of design, shape, and form. As with engineering design, hat designers must be able to assess fit of product (e.g. client’s face and head shape with hat size and function). Any woman can wear a hat or fascinator – It’s about finding the best design to compliment the shape of the face and head size of the wearer.

What do you love most about your job as a designer?

I have been fortunate enough to be have my work showcased in local, national, and international magazines. From local Styleline Magazine to national Solis Magazine – New York and then to KEEL Magazine – International.  This Fall 2016, I will be showcasing three pieces at New York Fashion Week in a Collaboration with designer Mila Pershyna.

I am also proud to announce that my daughter has begun working with me.  Savannah, age 13, began making fascinators with me last year.  She has since begun designing her own line of jeweled hair combs for young women.

I currently have a bridal line and a derby hat line for women. I [plan] to expand my business this year to include jeweled headpieces, a children’s line with my daughter Savannah, couture year round wear, and church hats.

Savannah Willnus, 13, in a custom creation.

This is my daughter’s first client, Lia.  Savannah designed and created her hair comb for prom.

What is your customer like and what do they wear? What are they interested in?

It’s difficult for me to define this because I feel this career chose me….I love creating pieces that make women feel beautiful. I believe that life is a show and we are meant to dress for it

What my client is like.. My client is someone who enjoys fashion, but most of all…appreciates fashion. My clients are women who want something different – who want to push the boundaries of fashion with couture appeal

What are your current favorite styles for Summer?

I love jeweled pieces for everyday wear. Something in the hair suggests femininity and grace. Traditional lines.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself or your designs?

I was the Winner of the Head-to-Head Hat Competition at Michigan Fash Fest 2012. Derby Hats by Rachelle has been featured as a StyleLine Magazine Editor’s choice for headwear (2012, 2013, and 2014). Marie Rachelle (bridal line) has been featured by StyleLine Magazine as a trendsetter in bridal headwear for 2012, 2013, and 2014. Designed and created a one-of-a-kind costume headpiece for Simona Rodano, popular Italian actress and singer, for the 2012 Columbus Day Parade, which aired on ABC. My designs have been featured several times in The Metro You, Detroit News, StyleLine Magazine, Modern Model Magazine, The Metropolitan Detroit, Cover of Farmington Hills Life, SOLIS Magazine in New York, KEEL Magazine – International.  Derby Hats by Rachelle has been featured at State of MInd Gallery in Northville. Derby Hats by Rachelle was the featured designer at L.K. Finally, I designed the crowns for the upcoming Spring 2016 feature film ‘Crowning Jules’ by Lucas Miles which stars Jacqueline and Elizabeth Labadie.

These are the two crowns I made for the Lucas Miles feature film, ‘Crowing Jules’ to be released in Fall 2016.  Actresses are Jacqueline and Elizabeth Labadie.

Share with us your background and how you got started with styling…

My love of fashion and style began at 16 when I first started working retail in our local mall.  From then on I began informally styling family and friends, always searching to help them find “the perfect outfit” for their upcoming events.  It wasn’t till I began working with The Styled Life in 2015 that it became apparent there was a need for this service and my passion could also be a business.

When did Perfectly Appropriate start and how has your styling business evolved since?

Perfectly Appropriate was launched in January of 2016 and has been steadily growing ever since! It’s been fascinating to start something from scratch and define what people are looking for in a personal stylist.  Currently, I have a very loyal and steady client base and lots of plans for the future.  My next mission is to get a blog up and running with my website – stay tuned….

What do you love most about your job?

There is nothing more thrilling than knowing I’ve helped someone feel more confident in their wardrobe and genuinely excited about what they are wearing.  Saving people time and money by taking the guesswork out of what to wear is remarkably satisfying.  Not to mention, I love to shop!  Helping select key items to get more mileage out of a wardrobe is a real perk.

What is your ideal client like and what do they wear?  What are they interested in?

My ideal client is anyone who looks in their closet and feels overwhelmed.  I haven’t met a single person who doesn’t have a wonderful wardrobe just waiting for a fresh perspective.  Many times it is the finishing touches that can take you from feeling standard to stylish.  My clients are looking for advice on those finishing touches as well as a quick daily solution for what to wear.

What are your current favorite styles for the season?

Spring and summer styles are my absolute favorite and this season is no exception.  I can not get enough of bold bohemian floral prints and stacked heels.  Lace details are huge right now and I will wear them on anything from jackets to shorts.  Seeing the athleisure presence again this season was wonderful since is a staple in my daily life.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself or styling tips you would like to share?

Style is defined by individual taste and preference.  It can be influenced by trends but is always highly personal.  I love to help people identify what the “Perfectly Appropriate” wardrobe choice is for their unique personality and lifestyle.

Local Fashion Spotlight: The Versatile Warrior

Share with us your career background and how you got started…

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to co-found The Versatile Warrior with my younger brother, Jamie. Although we’re both attorneys by day, our true passion has been in the men’s fashion industry. Our father was always a very sharp dresser and instilled in us both at an early age an appreciation for dressing well and the message or impression confidently wearing an outfit sends.

They say necessity is the mother of all inventions . . . In our case, the concept behind the Versatile Warrior was born after struggling to find the “perfect” men’s polo shirt, one that looked sharp, was ultra-comfortable, and could be worn both casually or dressed up.

Versatile Warrior-Polo

When did The Versatile Warrior launch and how has your company evolved since?

The business was started in late 2009 but it took us nearly 24 months to go from concept and design to market. While we’ve increased the number and colors of products we now offer (for example, increasing the polo shirt colors from four to nine), the commitment to quality, attention to detail, and our goal of making an inspired lifestyle clothing brand has remained unchanged.

What do you love most about your job?

Aside from the chance to get to run a business with my brother, I truly love the freedom provided in getting to design and bring to market our ideas! Being lawyers, we don’t always have the occasion to use our the “right side” of our brains; The Versatile Warrior has definitely provided us with an outlet for creativity!

What is your customer like and what do they wear?

The Versatile Warrior’s customer is just that –versatile, especially in terms of personality and characteristics. He may be young or slightly older. A father or a bachelor. There are a few details that will remain consistent however- an appreciation for true craftsmanship and a classic style. Our customer’s clothes don’t define, but expound upon, who they are and what they stand for. The clothes they chose are modern, yet tailored- always presenting a polished, well-curated look. The look of someone who’s playful yet punctual. A man that can always be relied upon.

What are your current favorite products?

We’re really excited for our new pastel-colored polo shirts which just were unveiled for this Spring.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself or your company?

We’re strong believers in subtle details. For example, all of our clothing tags for our clothes are embroidered with the Latin phrase “Semper Vincit” which translates to “always conquer.” We’ve adopted this as our company motto and believes it represents the ideals of our brand – that whatever challenges life presents, face them head on with confidence, determination and courage. To us, as well as our company’s fans who put on our clothing, it’s a reminder of what is capable of being accomplished, especially when wearing our clothes.

Local Fashion Blogger Feature: Meet Grace Liang of Color And Grace

Fashion bloggers are the go-to these days for style advice and inspiration.  We are proud to feature a local fashion blogger who is making waves with her style and sharing it all on her blog, Color and Grace.  Learn more about Grace Liang in our exclusive interview!

Share with us your background and how you got started with your blog...

I was born and raised in China and moved to the U.S.A. in 2007 to marry my husband. Fashion has always been something I really enjoy and my dream has been to somehow work in that industry. My first try was when I was in high school. I was accepted by a fashion design school in Beijing, China but my family couldn’t afford the tuition. In China at that time, we didn’t have any working opportunity or student loans like they do here. My second try was back in 2005, when I opened my own online women’s clothing boutique. It was pretty popular very quickly so I added my home studio and even hired an assistant. But because of my plan to move to America I had to sell that business. You know the saying “third time’s the charm”. Round 3 came about 16 months ago. I was web surfing blogs and websites and suddenly it hit me. If I used the same investment of my time that I was on looking at other people’s work and instead, put that energy into starting my own blog, I might actually be able to build something. Plus, I had just turned 40 earlier that year, if I didn’t try it then, I might never get another chance to satisfy my passion about fashion.

When did Color and Grace start and how has your blog evolved since?

Color and Grace was born on December 7, 2014. In the 16 months since it has grown to about 30,000 monthly page views and totally about 30,000 followers. Color and Grace has become the place for petite/over 40’s women who are looking for inspiration, tips and ideas for fashion and life style. I am always looking for ways to improve my content and in recent months have switched my focus to use my blog as a platform to promote local designers, events and anything else fashion related in the greater Detroit area. I realized that with my blog I actually have a platform to help others and am happy and proud to do so. Detroit is coming back and I love to play a positive role in this movement.

What do you love most about your job as a fashion blogger?

Seeing and hearing how some of my followers are looking and feeling their best because they used my suggestions. And all the fun events that I got invited to. For example, the recent New York Fashion Week. But the best part is I have met so many great people because of blogging.

What is your reader like and what do they wear? What are they interested in?

I believe my readers follow me because we all love the elegant and classy style. We are not trend victims, but we are not behind the times either. We know how to mix high end and mainstream, and also add a little bit of a fun twist to inject our personality.

What are your current favorite styles for Spring?

I love traveling very much and have been to many places. so this Spring I am really into the Globetrotter style.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself or your blog?

Ordinary, everyday people can overcome huge obstacles in their lives if they remember two things. Believe in yourself and do not give up! The average American can not even imagine the conditions where I grew up in northeast China. I tell my husband about the house I lived in and he just shakes his head and mumbles something about pioneer times. Throw in the traditional cultural beliefs in China that boys are the chosen gender and there was little chance and zero support for me or my dreams.

It wasn’t until I had moved away from home to the big city life of Shanghai that I finally started breaking away from what I called my Ugly Duckling phase. I was in my 30’s when I first heard I might just be pretty. The first time a man ever encouraged me to follow my dreams was from the one I moved to America to marry. He helped me to really believe in myself and since then, more and more good things have happened.

It’s not easy. I work really hard at my life. I have a full time job along with being a full time blogger. Then in my spare time, I hang out with my family and friends or am in my garden or working around our home. Throw in a little time to eat and sleep and there just aren’t enough hours in most days. But when I sit down and look around me I can honestly say I love my life now!

There’s no doubt in my mind that If I can do it, so can you! Just don’t give up on your dreams!

Share with us your background and how you got started with styling…

I have always had a passion for fashion and loved putting complete looks while out and about shopping! I became a stylist for a leading accessories business and enjoyed sharing with others how to put amazing looks together with items from your existing wardrobe without spending a fortune. Once I became a mom I realized how easy it is for us to focus on caring for our little ones and often times neglect taking care of ourselves. It becomes convenient to wear the same yoga pants, mom jeans, or the same outfits for work. I too became a victim of losing my “sense of style” and made the decision to do a complete closet clean out and keep those clothes that made me look and feel confident. In addition, I used the skill of versatility to create multiple looks from just a few pieces of clothes! I wanted to share this easy yet beneficial transformation with other moms and decided to do styling full time!

When did (your business name) open and how has your styling business evolved since?

I founded Glam Up Style in June 2014 as an online boutique that created complete outfits. In the summer of 2015 I added in the styling aspect and loved it so much that I transformed the business into a full time styling service in December 2015 and it has been taking off ever since!

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing women happy and feeling confident about their looks again! I love it when a client tells me that they are excited to get dressed because they love everything they own.

What is your ideal client like and what do they wear?  What are they interested in?

My ideal client is a powerhouse mom (those who strive for awesomeness in their home and work/business). She loves wearing anything that provides comfort! She is interested in how to get comfortable yet stylish looks in her wardrobe so she can feel great as well as look fabulous!

What are your current favorite styles for the season?

Fringe!!! I am true boho at heart so when I saw the fringe trend taking center stage this season I was beyond excited. I love the different variations that is available with this trend and how certain looks can appeal to all style types and occasions.

Local Business Spotlight: Clarkston Makeup Studio

We are so excited to feature another local business in today’s spotlight: Clarkston Makeup Studio!  The owner, Aubrey Emerson, is an amazing woman who is touching lives through beauty and makeup daily.  Learn more about her fabulous space and services in our exclusive interview!

Share with us your career background and how you got started…

When did Clarkston Makeup Studio open and how has your store evolved since?
Clarkston Makeup Studio opened March 28th 2015. Since opening less than a year ago I have noticed the community has embraced my business and welcomed me with open arms. I have also been able to expand business by offering new services such as group makeup lessons. Since offering this at the studio it has become a huge hit in the community. My clients love that they can spend a night out with their friends learning about makeup together, and I love being able to guide them to trying new things and enhancing their technique. Almost six months into opening the studio I was already becoming busy and needed to hire another artist. I hired Lexi, who brought new things to my business as well. Lexi is a body painter and does henna designs, I am so happy to have these new talents present in my studio.

What do you love most about your job?

I love what I do, so for me I don’t feel like I’m working. I get excited everyday to see my clients and to help them in any way I can. It’s always hard for me to leave the studio because I am truly doing what I love everyday. I can’t even say what my favorite service to perform is because I need all of them in my life. If I spend all day doing brows then I get so excited for my next makeup application, and vice versa. I am so blessed to have the clients that I do and to have the studio of my dreams.

What is your customer like and what do they wear?

My clients are a variety of ages, genders and skill levels. We have a lot of mothers who are coming to the studio to get their brows done or spending some much needed time on themselves when they want a makeup lesson. We have lots of males who come in to get their brows done. Young girls often come in for brows or to get their makeup done for Prom or Homecoming. We are often seeing our clients wearing a range of clothing from office wear, workout clothes, all the way to formal wedding attire.

What are your current favorite products in store?

We only carry products we love! Picking favorites is hard but we cant get enough of our Soft Taupe brow definer. It’s a felt tip marker for your brows, it creates a very sheer coverage to fill in the shape of the eyebrow easily and naturally. Our other favorite makeup product would have to the be Tinted Moisturizer. It has an SPF of 20 and is a great sheer natural coverage, great for moms on the go who can’t fuss with foundation.
Anything else you would like to tell us?
Clarkston Makeup Studio embraces everyone. We love every face that walks through our doors, whether you have all the makeup in the world or you’ve only ever had lip balm. We believe that everyone is beautiful and that everyone is welcome. The studio is your refuge from daily life, to pamper yourself with a lesson, or to let us pamper you with an eyebrow arch or makeup application. We are always excited to spend time sharing our knowledge and our passion with Clarkston and wherever our clients come to us from.
Thank you so much for sharing with us.  Be sure to check out Clarkston Makeup Studio’s webpage and social media for upcoming events and to book your appointments!

Don’t Replace Your Wardrobe This Year…Rediscover It!

Every new year brings new trends, new styles, and new sales just BEGGING you to add new items to your already full wardrobe.  And every year, we continue to be inspired by these new looks, outfits, and items that have the potential to make our wardrobe even better.

But this year, we are going to try a different approach.

Instead of purchasing that new top that looks so cute on the model, we are going to find a similar top in our closet and wear it again.

Instead of buying a whole new outfit to try out the new trend, we are going to buy one piece that we already know can be worn multiple ways with our current wardrobe.

Instead of wearing the same 20% of our wardrobe like last year, we are going to create new outfits, with combinations of pieces we would have never tried.

How are we going to do this?

Using our virtual closet, we’re going to send that cute Pinterest photo to our stylist and request a new outfit using our own clothes.

Using our virtual closet, we’re going to ask our stylist what piece our wardrobe is missing and let them do the work to find that perfect purchase for us.  AND let them show us up to 10 different ways that it will work with our wardrobe.

Using our virtual closet, we’re going to have new outfits created for us each month by a professional.  Outfits we never would have thought of, and now we don’t have to.

It’s a new year.  Love the way you look. Live your life.
